Group says wrongfully convicted NY man to be freed
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An organization that uses DNA evidence to clear people wrongfully convicted of crimes says prosecutors will ask a New York judge to free a man imprisoned for killing a woman in 1988.
Lawyers from the Innocence Project will be in a Rochester court Wednesday afternoon. They are seeking the dismissal of the criminal charges against Frank Sterling. He was convicted in 1992 of killing 74-year-old Viola Manville, of Rochester.
The Monroe County district attorney confirms there’s a hearing involving Sterling, but wouldn’t comment beyond that.
The 46-year-old Sterling is serving 25 years to life. He confessed to Manville’s murder in 1991 but later recanted.
Innocence Project officials say DNA evidence exonerates Sterling. It says another imprisoned man has confessed.
