Ex-Vt. police chief sentenced in drug case

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — A former Vermont police chief who abruptly fell from grace after a fender-bender helped expose his drug problem has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Michael Lowe, the former chief in Vergennes (ver-JEHNZ’), was sentenced on Wednesday in Vermont District Court in Middlebury.

Lowe pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of drugs, fraudulently obtaining prescription medication and neglect of duty following an accident last year in which his cruiser struck a parked car.

Lowe has since undergone drug treatment.

On Wednesday, Judge Courtland Corsones sentenced him to one and a half to three years in jail, all of it suspended except for six months.
