Randy Quaid and wife arrested in Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Randy and Evi Quaid showed up in a criminal courtroom two weeks late Monday and were arrested on outstanding warrants, authorities said.
The actor and his wife were ordered held on $100,000 bail and told to return for a court hearing Wednesday, Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter said in an e-mail.
The couple have repeatedly failed to show up in a Santa Barbara court for hearings in a felony case alleging that they defrauded an inn out of more than $10,000. They have pleaded not guilty, and their attorney has said the money has been repaid and the Quaids hope to resolve the case.
But the couple’s repeated missed appearances cost them $40,000 in bail that they forfeited after missing an April 12 hearing. Warrants for the Quaids’ arrest were issued after they didn’t show up the following day, either.
The Quaids’ attorney, Robert Sanger, declined to comment on Monday’s developments.
Randy Quaid is best-known for supporting roles in films such as “Independence Day” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” He is the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid.
The case has been ongoing since September. A criminal complaint alleges the couple used an invalid credit card to defraud the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito of more than $10,000.
