Nigerian newspaper journalist shot dead
LAGOS, Nigeria — Police say a Nigerian journalist has been shot and killed by gunmen who raided his home.
Lagos State police spokesman Frank Mba says Edo Ugbagwu, a justice reporter for the daily newspaper The Nation, died Saturday in the shooting. Mba says the gunmen shot the 42-year-old journalist after some sort of confrontation at his home.
Mba said Monday detectives still don’t have a motive for the crime.
Crime remains a problem in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city. However, journalists have been targets over their reporting in the past. The Committee to Protect Journalists says such attacks have led some fearful reporters to censor their own stories.
Last year, Bayo Ohu, a politics editor from the daily newspaper The Guardian, bled to death after being shot at his house in Lagos.
