Brief hearing scheduled in Christmas bomb case

DETROIT — A second court hearing is scheduled in the case of a Nigerian man who has been charged with trying to blow up a Detroit-bound plane on Christmas Day with nearly 300 people aboard.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO’-mar fah-ROOK’ ahb-DOOL’-moo-TAH’-lahb) is not expected to appear at Tuesday’s status conference in federal court in Detroit.

Court spokesman Rod Hansen says the status conference probably won’t last long.

Hansen has provided no details of what will be discussed.

Abdulmutallab is charged with trying to detonate a bomb hidden in his underwear on a flight from Amsterdam. He was arraigned Jan. 8 and is in custody at the federal prison in Milan, Mich.

In February, Abdulmutallab waived his right to go to trial within 70 days.
