Ex-Red Army Faction member charged

BERLIN — Ex-Red Army Faction member Verena Becker is facing charges for her alleged role in the 1977 assassination of a West German federal prosecutor.

The country’s federal prosecutor’s office charged Becker Thursday with being an accessory to the fatal ambush on prosecutor Siegfried Buback, one of the group’s most notorious killings, German news agency DAPD reported.

Becker was arrested last August after a new investigation was opened into the April 7, 1977 attack, in which Buback’s driver and bodyguard also were killed.

That investigation was based in part on new evidence generated using DNA samples, including one linking Becker to a letter from the Red Army Faction sent on the day of the attack.
