Va. grand jury indicts man in 8 slayings at home
APPOMATTOX, Va. — A grand jury has indicted a Virginia man on capital murder and other charges for the shooting deaths of eight people at a rural home that triggered a manhunt focused on nearby woods.
The Appomattox County grand jury returned the indictments Tuesday after hearing evidence against Christopher Speight (SPAYT).
The 39-year-old Speight was arrested Jan. 20, a day after eight people were killed at the home he shared with his sister, her husband and their two children. Those family members were among the victims.
Police says Speight shot at a police helicopter and spent the night in the woods before surrendering.
Police have not given a motive for the killings, but people who knew Speight say he had a history of mental breakdowns.
Speight is being held without bond.
