Suicide bomber kills 1 in NW Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Police say a suicide bomber has attacked a meeting of anti-Taliban volunteers in northwestern Pakistan, killing one person and critically wounding two others.

Police official Kauser Ali says the attacker detonated his explosives as the three were leaving the meeting Monday in Tank city in North West Frontier Province.

Ali says one of the men died after reaching the hospital and the two others were being treated for their injuries.

Pakistan has been plagued by a Taliban-led insurgency that has killed thousands of people in the past few years, many of them in the northwest.

The Pakistani government has encouraged locals to form militias to fight the militants.
