Ex-Seton Hall player charged in armed robbery
NEWARK, N.J. — A former Seton Hall basketball player has been arrested, accused of robbing a house full of people at gunpoint.
Prosecutors in Essex County, N.J., say Robert Mitchell entered a house in South Orange on Monday and robbed eight people at gunpoint. He was arrested Tuesday in Newark and charged with robbery, kidnapping and burglary. All three offenses carry 10- to 20-year maximum prison sentences.
Mitchell was kicked off the team Sunday by coach Bobby Gonzalez, who has since been fired by the school. Seton Hall did not give a reason for Mitchell’s dismissal.
It was not known if Mitchell had retained an attorney.
Mitchell, a 23-year-old junior forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., played in 31 games this season, averaging 8.4 points and 3.8 rebounds.
Gonzalez was fired by the school on Wednesday, a day after the Pirates lost in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament.
