Probation camp teacher accused of allowing fights

LOS ANGELES — A former Los Angeles County probation camp teacher has been arrested on allegations that he encouraged fights between juveniles during class.

Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said 43-year-old Stephen Wesley was arrested Tuesday morning at a home in Canoga Park in the San Fernando Valley.

Whitmore says the arrest stems from several alleged incidents in 2008 in which students were allowed to fight while Wesley looked on.

Kerri Webb, spokeswoman with the Los Angeles County Probation Department, says a student who had been injured in a fight alerted officials. One of the incidents was captured on videotape.

Whitmore did not know if Wesley had an attorney.

The district attorney’s office says it’s reviewing the case.
