AP Sources: Pentagon gunman stayed in Nev. motel

WASHINGTON — Law enforcement officials say the California man who opened fire on police outside the Pentagon stopped at a motel in Reno, Nevada, before traveling to the nation’s capital.

It is not immediately clear how long John Patrick Bedell stayed there, or if it was anything more than a stopover on his way to a violent end.

Authorities say Bedell pulled a gun at the entrance to the Pentagon Thursday night, shooting two police officers before being fatally wounded by return fire.

The officials say the two wounded guards were officers Jeff Amos and Marvin Carraway, both of whom returned fire. They say a third guard they did not name also fired. Bedell was shot in the head and the left arm. The officials are speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the case.
