Brother of Sinn Fein leader surrenders to police

DUBLIN — Police say the brother of Sinn Fein party leader Gerry Adams has surrendered to Irish authorities to face 23 charges of sexually abusing his daughter.

Liam Adams walked in to a central Dublin police station Thursday the day after the Irish High Court issued a European-wide warrant for his arrest.

He fled to the Republic of Ireland to avoid a November 2008 Belfast hearing over the charges of abusing his daughter Aine for eight years when she was a child.

Gerry Adams has admitted he knew about the alleged abuse since 1987 but never told police — in keeping with Sinn Fein’s longtime policy of rejecting the Northern Ireland forces of law and order.

Liam Adams’ lawyer says he denies the charges and will fight extradition to the British territory of Northern Ireland.
