Bail for Argentine fighting extradition for deaths

MIAMI — A federal judge in Miami has released a former Argentine military officer wanted in his home country for the 1972 massacre of leftist guerrillas.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Dube on Tuesday also set an April 2 extradition hearing for 67-year-old Robert Guillermo Bravo, who was arrested last week in Miami. Bravo was released on $1.2 million bail.

Argentina is seeking Bravo’s extradition on 16 counts of murder and other charges. Bravo’s attorney Neal Sonnett says his client is innocent and was exonerated by an Argentine military investigation.

Bravo is a naturalized U.S. citizen and businessman who has lived in the U.S. since 1973. His Miami-based consulting company has contracted with federal agencies including the Defense Department and Bureau of Prisons.
