Sheriff identifies detective killed in shootout at Central California mobile home

Calif. detective slain in shootout is identified

FRESNO, Calif. — A sheriff has identified the homicide detective killed in a shootout while serving a search warrant at a mobile home park in Central California.

Sheriff Margaret Mims says 49-year-old Joel Wahlenmaier was a 12-year veteran of the force, a husband and father of two children.

Wahlenmaier was with another deputy and a fire department arson investigator when the suspect in their case opened fire Thursday morning from his mobile home 25 miles west of Fresno. The suspect, who has not been identified, also was killed.

Mims says Deputy Mark Harris was wounded and is recovering.

Police Officer Javier Bejar was critically wounded when he arrived for backup. Authorities say he’s not expected to recover.
