Jury sees video of Nev. federal building shooting
LAS VEGAS — A coroner’s jury in Las Vegas has viewed graphic video of a shotgun-wielding assailant opening fire and mortally wounding a security guard inside a federal courthouse.
The Clark County coroner’s inquest jury also heard Friday about a deputy U.S. marshal who was wounded before federal agents and security officers killed the gunman, 66-year-old Johnny Lee Wicks.
A police detective testified Wicks fired five times, and marshals and guards retaliated with 85 shots during a furious Jan. 4 gunbattle.
A medical examiner testified Wicks was struck by 14 bullets.
Video shows security guard Stanley Cooper crouching after being shot in the torso in the lobby of the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse. He later died.
Authorities say Wicks was angry after losing a lawsuit challenging a cut in his Social Security benefits.
