Convicted Holocaust denier Zundel being released

BERLIN — A German prosecutor says far-right activist Ernst Zundel will soon be released from prison after serving his five-year sentence for denying the Holocaust.

Mannheim prosecutor Andreas Grossmann says the 69-year-old Zundel will be released on March 1.

Zundel has been in custody since he was deported from Canada in 2005 and is getting credit for time served before his trial. He was convicted in 2007 of 14 counts of inciting hatred for years of anti-Semitic activities, including contributing to a Web site devoted to denying the Holocaust — a crime in Germany.

Zundel had argued he was being denied his right to free speech.

Grossmann says it is not clear where Zundel will go when released but that he has relatives near Stuttgart.
