Jackson calls Ore. police shooting ‘execution’
PORTLAND, Ore. — The Rev. Jesse Jackson is calling the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black man in Portland, Ore., an execution.
Jackson, at a news conference in Portland on Tuesday, criticized city plans to allow the officer to return to regular duty this week.
A grand jury last week declined to take action against Officer Ronald Frashour in the Jan. 29 shooting of Aaron Campbell but sent a letter to the prosecutor saying “something went terribly, terribly wrong.”
Campbell was shot in the back after emerging from an apartment with his hands over his head. He was reportedly distraught over the death of his brother earlier in the day.
Mayor Sam Adams and Police Chief Rosie Sizer defended the city at a news conference earlier Tuesday day, where they released recordings of 911 calls and a police report.
