Trial in slaying of 3 Pittsburgh cops to be moved

PITTSBURGH — The state Supreme Court has ruled that a central Pennsylvania jury will decide the fate of a man accused of killing three Pittsburgh police officers.

The jury will come from Dauphin County because of intense pretrial publicity in the Pittsburgh area. Dauphin County is about 165 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Twenty-three-year-old Richard Poplawski is accused of gunning down three officers last April as they responded to a domestic disturbance at his home.

An Allegheny County judge granted a defense request last week for an outside jury; it was up to the Supreme Court to decide which county would supply the jurors.

Friday’s ruling means that the judge and attorneys will travel to Harrisburg for jury selection.

A trial date has not been set.
