Abortion activists drawn to Kansas murder trial
WICHITA, Kan. — The woman who shot and wounded Dr. George Tiller in 1993 has said the doctor who provided late-term abortions “needed to be killed for the sake of justice.”
Shelley Shannon’s first public statement on the matter comes as abortion activists from across the nation prepare to converge in Wichita for the trial of Tiller’s confessed killer.
Shannon sent a message from her Minnesota prison to Iowa activist Dave Leach. It asserts that whatever happens in the Kansas courtroom, “justice was done” on May 31 — the day Tiller was killed.
Jury selection proceeded behind closed doors Tuesday in the first-degree murder trial of Scott Roeder. The 51-year-old from Kansas City, Mo., has publicly admitted killing Tiller while the doctor was serving as a church usher.
