Woman told mom of marital problems before death

WACO, Texas — A woman has testified at her son-in-law’s murder trial that her daughter found crushed pills in her husband’s briefcase shortly before she died.

Matt Baker is accused of drugging his wife, Kari Baker, and smothering her with a pillow after she fell unconscious. He has denied killing her and says she was despondent over the 1999 death of their daughter, who had a brain tumor.

Kari Baker’s mother, Linda Dulin, told jurors Friday that Matt Baker accused his wife of causing the death of their 16-month-old daughter.

Kari Baker’s death was initially ruled a suicide but the case reopened after her parents’ civil litigation team gave new evidence to authorities.

The 38-year-old former Baptist minister faces up to life in prison if convicted.
