Jury picked for Mass. mom’s trial in OD death

BROCKTON, Mass. — A jury has been chosen in the murder trial of a mother accused — along with her husband — of killing their 4-year-old daughter by overmedicating her.

A jury of nine women and seven men was selected Wednesday for Carolyn Riley’s trial. Testimony is to begin Tuesday.

Prosecutors announced earlier in the day that they would try her separately from her husband, Michael Riley. No date was immediately set for his trial.

The girl had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and bipolar disorder. Prosecutors say the Rileys gave her too much of the drugs she was prescribed for the disorders.

The Rileys’ lawyers say they were only following directions from the girl’s psychiatrist and that she died of pneumonia in 2006.
