LUCKNOW - A suspected poacher has been arrested for killing an eight-year-old male tiger in a forest area in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district, an official said Wednesday.

Sources in the forest department in Lakhimpur Kheri, some 180 km from here, said a group of poachers might have killed the tiger by electrocution.

“Wires have been found lying near the animal’s body that was recovered late Tuesday evening,” Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), North Kheri, K.K. Singh told IANS.

“We have arrested a man who could be behind the killing. However, only after the post-mortem report, we will be able to establish the reason behind the tiger’s death,” he said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) at Bareilly, he added.

Lakhimpur Kheri’s Dudhwa, one of the country’s largest tiger reserves, has 106 tigers, according to the last census.
