NEW DELHI - Police Tuesday advised Delhiites to check the weather forecast, keep vehicles in good condition and carry high visibility jackets to cut down fatalities in road accidents due to fog.

“The city has been experiencing foggy weather for the past few days. It becomes all the more imperative on the part of motorists to follow certain precautions to avoid accidents and related injuries,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic) S.N. Srivastava.

“Check weather reports before you set off on a journey. Know exactly where you are going and plan your route before you set out. Keep your vehicle in good condition. Ensure everything is in working order, especially lights, brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, radiator, battery and car heating system.”

“If possible, keep a high visibility jacket and torch in the car so that you can see and be seen in case you have to get out of the car,” he added.

The police officer asked motorists to slow down and watch the speedometer.

“Fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion when you may actually be speeding. It can also bring rain and lead to slippery roads. Also fog is patchy. You may drive into a clear patch only to enter a far denser patch moments later. Turn on your wipers and demisters. Do not tail-gate or hang on to the rear lights of the car in front as this will not give you enough distance to stop safely,” he said.

“Honk periodically to let other drivers know you are there. Do not attempt to overtake other vehicles - you may be hit by oncoming vehicles. Use the right edge of the road or painted road markings/central divider as a guide and be patient. Do not pass lines of traffic,” he advised.
