DC-area sniper apologizes to Louisiana victim

NEW ORLEANS — A Louisiana man shot by convicted DC-area sniper Lee Boyd Malvo has received a letter of apology.

John C. Gaeta (gey-duh) says he’s glad Malvo wrote him but isn’t quite sure whether the sentiment is sincere.

Last month, Malvo confessed to Louisiana detectives that he shot Gaeta in the parking lot of the Hammond Square Mall, but said he thought the man had died.

The shooting was part of a criminal spree by Malvo and John Allen Muhammad that left 10 people dead and terrorized the Washington, D.C., area for three weeks in October 2002.

Gaeta says Malvo expressed remorse in his letter and relief that he had not killed him.
