Medical examiner testifies in home invasion trial

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Connecticut’s medical examiner is resuming his testimony in a murder trial about the deaths of a woman and her two daughters in a home invasion three years ago.

Wayne Carver took the witness stand Thursday in New Haven Superior Court in the case of Steven Hayes, one of two men charged with murder, sexual assault and other crimes in the deaths of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters, 17-year-old Hayley and 11-year-old Michaela.

On Wednesday, Carver testified Michaela died from breathing smoke after the suspects set fire to her home in Cheshire, and she likely had a painful, panic-stricken death.

As trial resumed on Thursday, the judge said prosecutors expect to conclude their case early next week.
