Pope continues UK tour despite alleged threat

LONDON — Pope Benedict XVI has met with British Prime Minister David Cameron as six men arrested in an alleged terror attempt against the pontiff remain in police custody.

Benedict was also meeting with the deputy prime minister and Britain’s opposition leader Saturday before celebrating Mass in Westminster Cathedral.

Benedict is carrying on with his plans despite a pre-dawn raid on a garbage depot Friday in which police arrested five cleaners accused of preparing a terror plot. A sixth person was arrested later. The Vatican says the pope is calm and no changes to his itinerary are planned.

Later Saturday, demonstrators opposed to the pope’s visit stage their main protest, marching from Hyde Park to the entrance of Downing Street, Cameron’s residence.
