Ecuador says 2nd migrant survived Mexico massacre

QUITO, Ecuador — Ecuador’s president says a second person survived a drug gang’s massacre of 72 migrants in Mexico.

President Rafael Correa made the statement late Tuesday while welcoming the return of the only previously identified survivor, Freddy Lala of Ecuador.

Correa says there was another survivor from Honduras. He was not identified to avoid putting him in danger.

Mexican officials say Lala escaped the massacre and on Aug. 24 led marines to the site of the slayings in northern Mexico. They say the Zetas drug gang apparently kidnapped the migrants and killed them because they refused to help the gang.

A spokeswoman for Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office said Wednesday that prosecutors had not located any other survivor of massacre.
