NJ nurse charged with stealing from beating victim
ELIZABETH, N.J. — A nurse at a northern New Jersey hospital has been charged with stealing several hundred dollars from an unconscious man who was brought to the hospital emergency room.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office on Monday charged 39-year-old Stephan Randolph of Flemington with third-degree theft.
Authorities say Randolph was on duty July 17 when 47-year-old Abelino Mazaniego was brought to Overlook Hospital in Summit with a severe head injury.
Mazaniego died three days later. Three teenagers have been charged with attacking him.
Summit police began an investigation after family members reported that $640 was missing from Mazaniego’s wallet.
Authorities did not know if Randolph had retained a lawyer. A phone listed in Randolph’s name rang unanswered Monday evening.
