Young detainee to boycott trial at Guantanamo

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The youngest detainee at Guantanamo Bay says he wants to fire his attorneys and he plans to boycott his upcoming trial.

Omar Khadr is accused of throwing a grenade that killed an American soldier during a 2002 firefight at an al-Qaida compound in Afghanistan.

The Canadian Press reported from a pretrial hearing Monday that Khadr said he has no hope of justice from the tribunal system at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba.

The 23-year-old Khadr also said he rejected a deal that would have him serve only five years in prison if he pleaded guilty. He said the offer was meant to make the U.S. government look good.

The judge presiding over the case, Army Col. Patrick Parrish, said the trial will begin as scheduled on Aug. 10.
