Reservist dead, 1 in custody in Ga. post shooting
FOREST PARK, Ga. — Army officials are investigating the shooting death of an Army reservist at a military base south of Atlanta. Another reservist is in custody.
Army spokesman Col. Dan Baggio said the victim died Thursday at the U.S. Army Reserve Center located at Fort Gillem. He did not offer specifics about the shooting, which happened between 4:30 and 5 p.m. The center is a gathering place for area reserve units.
The reservist voluntarily surrendered after driving Thursday to a local police department after the shooting, the U.S. Army Reserve said in a statement Friday. It was not immediately known whether the man was in civilian or military custody.
Authorities withheld the names of the soldiers until they could notify family members, but did say both were men.
Army spokesman Tim Hale said both the victim and the alleged suspect were assigned to the Army Medical Department Professional Management Command, a unit that provides centralized management of Army medical personnel nationwide and readiness of all medical units and personnel.
Authorities have not determined a motive. Nobody else was injured.
A spokesman for Fort Gillem said the reserve center is located on the post but does not share the same command.
