Parents arrested after battered Ariz. infant dies
BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. — Police in western Arizona have arrested the parents of a 1-month-old boy who died after being airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital with severe injuries and signs of sexual abuse.
Bullhead City police say 19-year-old Staci Lynn Barbosa and 23-year-old Jonathan Edward Vandergriff were booked Tuesday into the Mohave County Jail.
They say both are charged with child molestation, child abuse, aggravated assault and sexual conduct with a minor.
Police were called to the Bullhead City hospital’s emergency room Tuesday morning after the infant was brought in with severe injuries. Authorities say the baby had broken ribs, was malnourished and dehydrated, and showed signs of sexual abuse and shaken baby syndrome.
The boy was airlifted to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, where he died Wednesday morning.
Police say more charges are pending against Barbosa and Vandergriff. It was unknown if either had an attorney.
