UK prime minister to visit area of mass shootings

LONDON — Britain’s prime minister will visit the area of rural northwestern England where a taxi driver went on a shooting spree, killing 12 people and wounding 11 others.

David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May plan to meet with the Cumbria county’s police chief Friday and other officers investigating Britain’s worst mass shooting since 1996.

The area, about 350 miles (560 kilometers) northwest of London, is in shock from Wednesday’s rampage. The gunman, 52-year-old Derrick Bird, committed suicide after the attacks.

Police are trying to determine a motive behind the attack. Police are investigating rumors that Bird had financial problems or family troubles.
