LIMA, PERU (GaeaTimes.com)- Lori Berenson, the woman who had been accused of having attempted to kidnap certain leaders of the Peruvian Congress, allegedly with the help of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary group, has been granted parole by a Peruvian judge. She has been granted conditional release after having completed fifteen years of her twenty years sentence, and has been asked by the judge to remain in Peru for the next five years in order to serve the rest of her sentence. In the meantime, she would be working as a translator and try to set up an independent bakery. On the other hand, the governments of both the countries are also not very sure about how to deal with Lori Berenson.
It is being speculated that Lori Berenson might be deported to the United States, although nothing is confirmed as of now. The Presidents of the United States and Peru are about to hold discussions concerning the case. Peruvian President Alan Garcia has commented that he would like to see Lori Berenson deported, but that comes in the way of the conditional release, which states that she must report to the authorities in Peru at least once in a month. American President Barack Obama has not mentioned anything about the case.
However, Lori Berenson and her family strictly stuck to their story, the same one that they have repeated for the past fifteen years: that she is absolutely innocent. The family is possibly going to appeal for a complete remittance of the sentence, so that she would be allowed to return to her country, along with her son, whom Lori Berenson had given birth to in prison itself, last year.
