Appeal delays release of Oregon mystery man
PORTLAND, Ore. — A federal judge has approved the release of an Oregon man who assumed the identity of a murdered boy, even though the man still refuses to reveal his real name.
The judge ruled Monday that the man known as Jason Evers should be released under strict conditions that include electronic monitoring.
But U.S. prosecutors won a 24-hour delay Monday to appeal the decision, arguing that the man still refuses to reveal his real name and is a flight risk.
The man, described in court papers as John Doe, was arrested last month for making a false statement on a passport application by using the name of a 3-year-old Ohio boy who was murdered in 1982.
