Report: Iran detains opposition leader’s bodyguard
TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian opposition website says authorities have arrested the chief bodyguard of the country’s opposition leader.
The Kalame website said Tuesday that Mir Hossein Mousavi’s guard was arrested at midnight.
Allegations that Mousavi’s presidential bid was thwarted through fraud in last June’s election set off months of political upheaval in Iran, including a bloody crackdown on street protesters.
Authorities have arrested several allies of Mousavi as well as hundreds of political activists and opposition figures. More than 80 of them have been sentenced to death or prison terms ranging from six months to 15 years.
The arrested guard, Ahmad Yazdanfar, has protected Mousavi since he served as prime minister in the 1980s.
