2 mountaintop mining foes held on $100,000 bail
JULIAN, W.Va. — Two mountaintop removal mining activists charged with blocking a road to a Massey Energy office are being held in the Southwestern Regional Jail on $100,000 bail.
Climate Ground Zero says it’s consulting lawyers and may challenge the amounts set Monday by Boone County Magistrate Porter Snodgrass.
Snodgrass did not immediately return a phone message.
Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Chad Barker says 18-year-old EmmaKate Martin and 23-year-old Ben Bryant were charged with trespassing, conspiracy, obstruction and littering.
He says they left garbage near their platform over the road in Julian.
The arrests come on the eve of Massey’s shareholders meeting in Richmond, Va.
Protests are expected there over concerns about safety and corporate responsibility.
