Teen charged in NJ carnival shooting dies
NEWARK, N.J. — Authorities say a New Jersey teen who was shot by a police officer after allegedly opening fire at a crowded carnival over the weekend has died.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said 17-year-old Rasheed Cherry of East Orange was pronounced dead shortly before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Cherry allegedly shot another 17-year-old from East Orange in the left elbow Friday night at a carnival in Bloomfield.
A Bloomfield police officer fired at Cherry, hitting him in the torso.
The prosecutor’s office said the shooting by the officer appears to be justified, but an investigation is continuing. The case will be presented to a grand jury, as is required in all shootings involving police.
