Liberian rape victim’s parents freed from AZ jail
PHOENIX — The parents of a 9-year-old Liberian girl who was gang-raped last summer have been freed from a Phoenix jail because court officials cannot find interpreters who speak their language.
The girl’s 59-year-old father and 47-year-old mother are charged with seven counts of felony child abuse for abuse and neglect reports dating back to 2005.
Their bond had been set at $30,000, but a Maricopa County judge released them Monday under conditions that include having no contact with their daughter.
Authorities say the couple’s daughter was lured to a storage closet at a Phoenix apartment complex, then sexually assaulted by four boys.
The oldest pleaded guilty in juvenile court to kidnapping, sexual assault and other charges. He is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.
