Teen charged in NJ carnival shooting

NEWARK, N.J. — Essex County prosecutors say a 17-year-old East Orange boy was the gunman who opened fire at a crowded carnival in northern New Jersey this weekend.

The teen, whose name was not released because of his age, wounded another youth Friday night before being shot and wounded by a Bloomfield police officer. He will likely face aggravated assault and weapons charges.

Katherine Carter, a prosecutor’s office spokeswoman, would not comment on a motive. She said there was no information on whether the victim — another 17-year-old from East Orange who was struck in the arm — knows the suspect.

The gunman, who was shot once in the torso, underwent surgery at University Hospital in Newark. The other teen was taken to Clara Mass Medical Center in Newark.

Both remained hospitalized Sunday, and were expected to recover.
