Man convicted in 1996 slaying of Ariz. businessman

TUCSON, Ariz. — A 67-year-old Arizona man has been convicted in the 1996 car-bomb slaying of a real estate developer in Tucson.

A Pima County Superior Court jury on Wednesday convicted Ronald Young on charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and first-degree murder. He faces life in prison with or without the possibility of parole on each count when he’s sentenced May 3.

Authorities say 52-year-old Gary Triano was killed when his car was blown up in the parking lot of a country club on Nov. 1, 1996. Investigators say a 17-inch pipe bomb filled with one pound of smokeless gun powder was detonated by remote control within 400 feet of Triano.

Prosecutors say Triano’s ex-wife, Pamela Phillips, hired Young to kill Triano and agreed to pay him one-fifth of Triano’s $2-million life insurance policy. The 52-year-old Phillips was arrested in Austria last year and is facing a murder charge.
