2 police killed by motorcycle gunmen in Haiti
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitian police say two off-duty officers have been shot to death near an open-air market in the capital.
Officials say the policemen were out of uniform and sitting in a car near the La Saline slum when gunmen pulled up on a motorcycle and opened fire Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators say one officer died in the back seat, while the other made it out of the car only to be killed on the pavement. A civilian man walking nearby was also fatally shot.
The killings come a week after a police consultant was shot to death in front of Haiti’s collapsed cathedral.
National Police spokesman Garry Desrosiers says such shootings have increased since thousands of prisoners escaped during the Jan. 12 earthquake.
