Newark airport breach suspect due in court Tuesday
NEWARK, N.J. — A graduate student charged with a security breach at a New Jersey airport that led to a terminal shutdown and worldwide flight delays is due back in court.
Haisong Jiang pleaded not guilty Feb. 9 to a misdemeanor charge of defiant trespassing. He has a court hearing Tuesday.
The misdemeanor charge carries a fine of up to $500.
Jiang is a Rutgers University student from China. He was arrested Jan. 8, days after authorities said he entered a restricted area at Newark Liberty Airport to see his girlfriend off.
The breach shut down a busy terminal and delayed or canceled about 200 flights around the world.
Jiang’s attorney has called his client “a lovesick man who made a mistake.”
