Detained US missionary expects to leave Haiti soon

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The last two Idaho missionaries jailed at a Haitian police station expect to head home soon.

Laura Silsby tells The Associated Press from behind bars she doesn’t think they will be there “much longer.”

Silsby and her nanny Charisa Coulter are awaiting a judge’s orders to release them.

They were detained with eight other Americans on Jan. 29 while trying to take 33 children out of the earthquake-ravaged country without papers. It was later found the children were given away by their parents.

The judge told AP on Tuesday he is awaiting a recommendation from prosecutors. He says he could order their release even if authorities decide to continue investigating.

The rest of the group was released Feb. 17.
