German terror suspects express regret
BERLIN — Three of four suspected Islamic terrorists accused of plotting to attack U.S. targets in Germany said Tuesday they would abandon violent extremism.
Alleged ringleader Fritz Gelowicz pledged in closing remarks at the state court in Duesseldorf not to return to any extremist organization.
“In the future, I will not carry out any further terrorist activities,” Gelowicz said, according to the German news agency DAPD.
Two other suspects, Daniel Schneider and Attila Selek, also expressed regret about their planned attack. The fourth defendant, Adem Yilmaz, remained silent.
The men were arrested in 2007 and charged with operating a German cell of the radical Islamic Jihad Union and plotting deadly bombing attacks.
A verdict is expected next Thursday.
