Charges filed in Arizona police officer’s slaying
PHOENIX — Authorities have filed a first-degree murder charge against a suspected shooter in last week’s slaying of an Arizona police officer during a traffic stop.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 35-year-old Christopher Angel Redondo of Globe also was charged Thursday with aggravated assault.
Redondo’s alleged accomplice — 30-year-old Daimen Irizarry of Gilbert — has been charged with aggravated assault and unlawful flight in connection with the 50-mile chase that followed the shooting of Lt. Eric Shuhandler last Thursday night in Gilbert.
The chase ended on US 60 near Globe, and Redondo and Irizarry were wounded in a gun battle with 40 police officers from five different agencies.
Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas says his capital punishment panel will examine the case and decide whether to seek the death penalty against Redondo.
