Rip Torn in Conn. court on burglary charges

LITCHFIELD, Conn. — Rip Torn has made an initial court appearance on burglary and firearms charges in Connecticut.

The “Men in Black” actor is accused of breaking into a bank in his hometown of Salisbury on Friday with a loaded revolver while intoxicated.

His attorney, A. Thomas Waterfall, says Torn will be able to post his $100,00 bond Monday and is expected to enter an alcohol treatment facility in New York as early as Tuesday.

Waterfall says 78-year-old Torn, who spent the weekend in jail, never brandished the gun, and has no history of violence.

Last year, Torn was given probation in a Connecticut drunken driving case and allowed to enter an alcohol education program. He has two previous drunken driving arrests in New York.

Torn did not enter a plea Monday. He returns to court Feb. 17.
