Police to be trained to deal with accident cases

NEW DELHI - Delhi Police are to train their personnel to deal with accident cases in an effort to help accident victims and their families get compensation faster, the Delhi High Court was told Friday.
According to the new guidelines, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) and insurance companies will settle accident claims within 120 days of the incident, and for that police will have to inform the court and insurance company of the accident within 48 hours of it taking place.
Appearing for Delhi Police, Additional Solicitor General A.S.Chandhiok submitted before Justice J.R. Midha that a two months module has been prepared for the police officers so that they know how to deal with accident related cases speedily.
“The programme will start from Feb 1 and will end in March and the new guidelines can then be implemented,” he said.
The court expressed satisfaction at the police’s step and asked them to implement the scheme from April 2 onwards.
Earlier, the court said that since the insurance companies have taken a big step forward by agreeing to a new mechanism for payment of compensation within a fixed time frame, police should also “show the grace to agree to perform an additional duty to serve the society”.
