NEW DELHI - A 25-year-old man who impersonated as a Delhi Police head constable and allegedly cheated half a dozen people by promising them vehicles auctioned by police at cheap rates, has been arrested, police said Thursday.
“Ashwani Kumar Sisodia was arrested Wednesday from northwest Delhi while he was having an altercation with an auto driver. He was wearing the police uniform that time and was posing as head constable Ramesh Chand,” a senior police officer said.
“A local policeman approached him and asked him about his place of posting. Sisodia was not able to give a satisfactory reply. One of the complainants, Chand Babu, who was with that policeman at that time, told him that ‘Ramesh Chand’ had taken Rs.62,000 from him to provide an auctioned car,” the officer added.
Police had received several complaints about people being cheated by a head constable in the past few months.
“Another auto driver Subhas Yadav also claimed that he was cheated of Rs.18,000 by Sisodia. On interrogation, Sisodia disclosed that he had come to Delhi in 2001 and started working in a private security company in Rohini. He then grew close to police personnel and learnt the working of the police,” the officer said.
“He told us that he came in contact with Balak Ram, who used to purchase police vehicles in auctions, and learnt more about the trade. He hails from Basti in Uttar Pradesh and at present lives in Jehangirpuri area,” he added.
Police recovered a complete set of uniform of a Delhi Police head constable, a fake identity card, a fake voters ID card and 12 electronic items purchased by him from the money earned by cheating people.
