BHOPAL - Four policemen posted in Madhya Pradesh’s Datia district were suspended Wednesday for laxity after a man committed suicide in a police lock-up, officials said. Earlier in the day, an irate mob had stoned the police station in protest of the suicide.

The angry crowd indulged in stone-pelting at Datia district’s Badauni police station Wednesday morning after news spread that a man had committed suicide in the police lock-up late Tuesday.

Mumbai police Tuesday arrested two men, Annu Pathan and Aqueel, in connection with a case of dacoity. They were handed over to the Datia police.

“Both of them attempted suicide by hanging themselves. Annu Pathan died in the lock-up while Aqueel was admitted to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition,” the officer added.

When locals came to know of the incident, they pelted stones at the police station and damaged vehicles parked outside.

Additional police force was rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control after the police resorted to mild force to disperse the mob.

“The situation is under control. Those suspended include Badauni station house officer Rakesh Sahu, a sub-inspector and two constables,” said Datia Superintendent of Police Anil Sharma.
