One dead in fire at Games village site

NEW DELHI - A woman labourer died and several others were injured in a fire that broke out in the temporary cabins erected at the Commonwealth Games Village site in Delhi Saturday, police said.
The fire broke out at the temporary cabins at the Commonwealth Games village site near Akshardham temple at around 4.58 a.m. Saturday. As many as 13 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. By 6.20 a.m. the fire was doused, said a fire brigade official.
The charred body of a 40-year-old woman Menka, a native of West Bengal, was discovered from the spot in the evening. The cause of the fire is not clear as yet, the official added.
Meanwhile, a Delhi Police officer said: Some other labourers suffered minor injuries. They lost their basic clothing and personal belongings to the fire.
The temporary cabins were reportedly provided by the contractor for the labourers working at the site. Seven such cabins were damaged due to the fire.
The person responsible for the cabins is being established and would be held liable, the officer added.
